Fwd: A Story About Tal
Lately, Tallis has been asking me if he will get to live in the future and I always tell him "definitely". He beams.
It's so great to see your kid so happy that they beam. It reminds me of a comedian who does a bit about kids (the Everybody Loves Raymond guy). He talks about his five year old looking out a window, just smiling. He asked him what he was thinking about. With a dreaminess in his voice, his kid said "candy". He noted that it was so incredible to be able to be so happy just thinking about candy.
Having Tallis ask me about "living in the future" and beaming when I tell him "yes" is kind of like that. But, you know, it's also kind of hard to think about because OF COURSE he'll get to live in the future so I always say "yes" and he always beams when I tell him that.
Just the other morning, he asked again. I said what I usually say but then added that it's the future in five minutes, in five weeks, in five years. I asked him what it was that he really wanted to know. He said that he wanted to know if he was going to get to live with robots.
Robots? Hmmm. I mentioned that robots are already here. I pointed out that he's met roboticists (he's met several, actually) who showed him pictures of their robots. Tallis explained that those robots weren't enough, that he wanted more robots. He wanted robots in the air and he wanted robots on the ground. He wanted lots of robots. He wanted to know if he was going to be able to live in THAT future with LOTS of robots. I thought about it for a minute and I told him that he definitely would.
He beamed.
You know what. I want to see that too.
